Surfing - when you can - on Phuket
This may
not be true surfing territory,
but those who are lucky enough
to catch the storm swells that follow the monsoon season storms will have
great fun in some of the most beautiful scenery.
And the on-shore fun and facilities on Phuket simply can't be beat
The
key words here are when you can for here on
Phuket there is no regular deep ocean swell that brings good waves to
surfing beaches.
The only waves available here are storm driven, and occurr only during the
monsoon season from June to OCtober. You simply have to be lucky to catch
good waves here. The best conditions occur after the monsoon winds have
blown from some days, then suddenly stop. The swells continue coming for
sevral days after the wind falls, and even themselves out to form some
excellent breaks. But they will usually only last about thee or four days
following the end of the wind, getting smaller each day. This happens off
and on during the monsoon, and the surfer just has to be hanging around to
get lucky.
But
when you do get lucky, the waves can be beautiful. Kata, with its curved
beach in a bay, gives a good break. There is another good one breaking onto
reef at the very northern end of Patong. And sometimes Nai Harn at the very
bottom end of the island offers good sets of waves. The highest number of
boards this keen body surfer has ever been able to count in Kata at one time
was 23.
Come back soon and we will offer photographs of each of these beaches with
waves...
