Albatross

Standing next to the water at the Canal Village inside the Laguna Phuket complex with a view to its five-star resorts, Albatross has a distinct charm to dine in while being one of the best-placed restaurants in Phuket. Must-tries include local dishes such as barbecued Phuket lobster and penang shrimp (dipped in curry and coconut milk), but also universal ones counting chicken sate, vegetable spring-rolls, filet mignon with French fries or baby potatoes and chicken with cashew nuts. The restaurant is open daily from 08:00, with live music from 19:00 to 22:00 and happy hours from 17:30 to 18:30 and from 21:30 to 22:30, when the last food order is also placed. Upmarket shops and restaurants haven’t only developed inside the Laguna Phuket complex. Tinlay place, located just after the traffic lights before the Laguna complex, offers a fair strip of such venues, with restaurants and bars including Toto, Tatonka, Tawai, Kargo and Supper Club. Most of them even provide free shuttles for Laguna guests.

Tatonka Restaurant

Displaying a unique ‘Globetrotter Cuisine’ on which most of its good fame was built, Tatonka serves excellent food at surprisingly small costs. The culture-specific flavours and food preparation techniques encountered by chef Harold Schwarz during his travels through Europe, North America and Southeast Asia all find themselves expressed in the dishes served in this great-value, must-try restaurant. Black Cat Restaurant

A welcoming open-air French restaurant with a unique bamboo style, the Black Cat invites both locals and tourists to drop in for quality food and a warm ambiance. The polite waiters and inexpensive meals are what make this restaurant so inviting. Foods that can be served include pizza, fresh tuna in lime sauce, fried mixed seafood, masaman curry, burgers and tom yum goong. Toto Italian Restaurant

Toto serves gourmet Italian food in an elegant, yet relaxed setting. It also offers the option of dining outside, in Toto’s Garden, situated just opposite the restaurant. It can be found just before the entrance of the Laguna Phuket complex.

Tawai

Siam Supper Club

The Siam Supper Club is a very popular socialisation, networking and top-quality food venue. Displaying a ‘California Cuisine’ menu and one of the most mouth-watering cheesecakes worldwide, this classy restaurant and lounge is better suited for the island’s more wealthy residents and tourists. However, if you go there, don’t miss their home-made chocolate brownies with vanilla ice cream. Located at Tinlay Place, near Tatonka, the Siam Supper Club is open daily from 18:00 to 01:30.

Blue Bell

The reasonably-priced Blue Bell is one of the few restaurants near the Laguna Phuket complex where guests can also admire the lake view while enjoying an open-air culinary experience. Their very well-known traditional Thai yum goong or green curry with chicken and fried mixed vegetables is well-worth a try if you’re unsure what to order. Sanwich Shoppe Laguna

The Sandwich Shoppe Laguna is part of the Woody’s Bakery & Café local franchise, owned by long-term resident Woody Leonhard. Providing some of the best sandwiches you can find in Phuket, the Sandwich Shoppe Laguna also has a variety of freshly baked products including cheesecake, blueberry muffins, bagels and almond croissants. If you also want to browse the Internet, you’ll find one of the fastest broadband connections on the island here for free, and you may also use one of the shop’s PCs if you don’t bring along your laptop. Chaba

Chaba offers Thai as well as international dishes, with regular live music starting at 19:00 and international sporting events being shown on their large screens. Little India

Once referred to as ‘the beach shack restaurants’, the beach front group of diners having laid on the side of Bang Tao Beach for a long time now have since refurbished to become more up to date and functional. Most of the establishments, such as Lotus, Tom Yum Goong, Wattana, Tik or Preeda’s Kitchen, are placed on the flanks of the Laguna Phuket resort complex.

Lotus Restaurant

Among the early openings in Bang Tao Beach, with more than two decades of history behind it, Lotus has some awe-inspiring sea views coupled with a complaisant ambiance and delicious Thai seafood. The reasonable prices coming along its individual character make it a clear must-try. Recommended dishes include barbecue seafood, penang gai, tom yum seafood and spring rolls. Tom Yum Goong provides an international, as well as Thai cuisine and also serves fresh seafood. Café Java

With over a decade of existence to look behind to, Café Java was originally established in Kamala, but moved to Bang Tao Beach. It overlooks the bay, offering a French and Thai menu, with seafood salad with asparagus and hot dressing, sea bream timbale with eggplant, and chocolate mousse among its specialities. Andaman Bang Tao Bay Resort Restaurant

The Andaman open-air bar and restaurant provides the best option for a calm start of the day, as their breakfast menu is very good and the place isn’t too crowded. You can also relax in the company of a cocktail or admire the breathtaking sunset in front of the white beach, as the establishment is open from 08:00 to 22:00 daily. The Orange House

You cannot miss the brightly coloured Orange House on the beach front opposite the Palm Beach Resort and the Sheraton. Despite the limited menu, due to the fact that the establishment operates more as a dive centre, café and bar rather than a restaurant, the Scandinavian breakfast, the American breakfast, the ham and cheese sandwich and the spring-rolls are all more than worth a try. The place is very friendly and not only open to divers, so anyone can come along and enjoy happy hour drinks or cocktails. Babylon Beach Club

The Babylon Beach Club is a rare sighting on Bang Tao Beach, being among the few high-end restaurants outside the Laguna complex. It provides a superb view of the Andaman Sea, offering a wide range of Italian and Thai authentic dishes, all interesting to try and prepared only with fresh market vegetables and seafood, hand-picked on a daily basis from local markets and international suppliers by their workers. However, reservations should be made in advance, at it might get crowded. It is open daily from 02:00 to 22:00, but closes early during the May-October low season. It is located between the Amora and Laguna Beach Resort hotels.

Nok & Jo’s is a family business serving a wide range of foods from Thai and international cuisine, such as pasta, pizza, burgers, barbecue and fresh seafood. Live music and buffets are organised every Sunday from 18:00 onwards, and a good number of wines and cocktails can be ordered. The Pantry Bakery

Lady Pie

You must try Aussie meat pies if you visit Lady Pie. With everything made from the best and freshest of local ingredients, this dish is their prime best seller, containing minced lean beef and onions, all in a rich beef gravy. Another must-try is the steak pie, containing lean, tender pieces of steak slowly cooked in onions and secret special ingredients destined to provide a tasty delight. Other quality products count sausage rolls, lean smoked eye rind bacon, cheesecake, and apple and blueberry pie. The diner is popular among local expats for obvious reasons. Farang

Since the first branch in Cherng Talay opened in 2004, the Farang restaurant has increased in local popularity, achieving favourite status. With an extraordinary cuisine resulted from the exotic blends and fusions created by their chef in his dishes, Farang certainly provides excellent serving at affordable prices. It is open daily from 10:00 to 11:00 and closed on Mondays. The first branch is situated before the Cherng Talay petrol station if heading towards the Heroines Monument, quite close to Lady Pie.
