KARON -the first beach south of
Patong, it is very, very different
Karon
is separated from Patong by a large headland and a winding, two kilometre
road. After Patong, driving into Karon is like arriving on a different
island. Karon is long with a lot of open space, and has four kilometres of
beautiful sand backed by sand dunes. Almost no buildings are visible from
the beach, giving it a quiet atmosphere.
There
a reasonable balance between hotel development and open space in Karon,
while it also offers a wide choice of resorts and bungalows spanning all
budgets and expectations. One of the island’s biggest resorts, the
Arcadia , is in Karon, where it enjoys the luxury of expansive grounds
and lush gardens. The Thavorn Palm Beach is another well-established
resort here which uses lots of space to hold several swimming pools in
tropical gardens. At the upper end of the market is the Karon Central
Village Resort , ideally set into the hillside at the beach’s northern
end, giving every room a beautiful sea view back along the beach. The resort
that boasts Phuket’s most outstanding natural setting and gardens, and which
PHUKET MAGAZINE once named ‘Phuket’s best medium size resort’, is also in
Karon. Marina Phuket has 100 plus Thai-style bungalows set into the
forest on the southern headland. The rooms and restaurants are connected by
boardwalks through lush foliage, and there is direct access to the beach.
