Two new international schools have announced their opening on Phuket as the island is rapidly evolving into an international education haven. The Kajonkiet International School, KISP, which already has a campus in Bangkok, will open its gates in Kathu on the 22nd of August 2011, while the construction of the new Huaqiao Phuket Thaihua International School in Phuket Town has commenced this May.
The decision to open a new school in Phuket was taken by Kajonkiet due to the ASEAN Community Plan, which will enable a free flow of goods, investments, capital and skilled labour between the 10 ASEAN countries starting from 2015. It has been forecast that, as the plan starts developing, Phuket will see a surge of permanent residents, making the study of the English language and other global skills essential. The school offers Thai, ESC (Thai and English) and English programmes, all popular among expats.
Apart from the two new schools, Phuket is also host to the British International School, BIS, a renowned English medium, co-educational day and boarding institution, and the Phuket International Academy Day School, PIADS, a nursery to grade school with plans of developing into a three-programme International Baccalaureate World School.
